The most worldwide known "Four Seasons" in music are the ones by Vivaldi composed in 1723 while he was in Mantua. They are in the typical Baroque style.
Verdi’s Four Seasons are part of the Opera ‘the Sicilian Vespers” composed during the 19th century while the patriotic spirit was very strong in Italy.
It was his first work for the Opera of Paris and originally in French. The premiere took place in Paris in 1855. Soon after it was translated in Italian. The Four Seasons were just an entertaining of pure dance called "divertissement" as Ballet was often used in the Operas. A moment of relief from the drama going on….

Jules Perrot ’s divertissement “Les Quatre Saisons” music by Pugni, was danced on 13th June 1848 at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London by the stars of that time, Spring: Fanny Cerrito, Summer: Carlotta Grisi, Autumn: Carolina Rosati and Winter: Marie Taglioni. It was possibly the first attempt of adapting the concept of the four seasons for a ballet.
